Casey Anthony to Be Grilled on Caylee

Casey Anthony faces the very real possibility of being hit with key questions about her daughter Caylee's death, despite her legal maneuvers to avoid doing so.

Zenaida Gonzalez is suing Casey for defamation after the Florida mom told cops that a woman with a similar name (Zanny the Nanny) had kidnapped Caylee.

During Casey's deposition in the proceedings last year, she refused to answer many questions posed by Gonzalez's lawyer, invoking fifth amendment privileges.

Casey is appealing her conviction for lying to police, and that's where it gets interesting, as Gonzalez's lawyers believe this will potentially help their case.

"She [Casey] has just filed her initial brief. If she wins her appeal and the charges are thrown out, there is no fifth amendment privilege," her attorney said.

"If she loses her appeal, she will have to talk as well because there is no criminal charge pending. Resolution of her appeal one way or the other is helpful to us."

The crux of Casey's appeal for lying to cops is that she was never given her Miranda rights when she was arrested on suspicion of murdering Caylee Anthony.

"The record establishes that the Appellant was placed under arrest, never Mirandized, and subsequently interrogated," the court documents state.

"In either scenario, the Appellant's statements were involuntary and therefore, the lower court erred in denying the Appellant's motion to suppress."

Casey contends jurors never should have heard those statements during the murder trial of Caylee, and that her conviction for lying to cops be tossed.

Meanwhile, Casey has been unable to land a book deal because publishers are afraid of the backlash, and her former lawyer Jose Baez says she's crazy.

Using the Nexus 7: The Kindle Fire's got something to fear

Google's Nexus 7 is a strange device. At 7?inches, it's smaller than an iPad ??and a breadbox, for that matter ??and with its impressive spec list, it's a bit more appealing than the similarly low-priced Kindle Fire. But how does it hold up in person?

Surprisingly well.

While?I cringe when I cradle the Kindle Fire's clunky body,?the Nexus 7 feels perfectly balanced and secure in my hand. It's a solid device?? the unit I'm using survived several awkward drops off a table's edge ? and it looks sleek.

On the inside, the Nexus 7 has a quad-core processor, a twelve-core GPU and 1 GB of RAM. Between that hardware and Project Butter???under-the-hood improvements which keep?Jelly Bean running particularly?smoothly?? the tablet's pretty darn speedy. When Google announced the Nexus 7, it pushed its content consumption features ? especially?a widget which collects books, magazines, TV shows, movies and music. It's an appealing tool and, like most things on the Nexus 7, it is consistently smooth and brisk.

I've only used the Nexus 7 for a couple of days now, but I already dread returning home and reaching for a Kindle Fire. I know that it'll feel slow, clunky, and unsatisfying in comparison.

BridgeHead Survey Finds Majority of Hospitals Lack Robust Disaster

BridgeHead Software today released the full results from its second-annual Healthcare Data Management (HDM) survey which determined that healthcare IT leaders around the world consider disaster recovery and business continuity their most pressing data management need. Of the survey responders, 65% said their data volumes had increased over the previous year, yet only 26% said they had ?robust, tried-and-tested? disaster recovery plans in place.

As BridgeHead reported in February, disaster recovery was voted the top healthcare IT investment priority for the second year in a row. The survey also confirmed that hospitals want more control over medical image data generated by Picture Archive and Communication Systems (PACS).

Jim Beagle, CEO of BridgeHead Software, said, ?In the face of unstoppable data growth, it is becoming a serious challenge for hospitals to store and protect patient data while also making it available for clinicians in a timely manner at the point of care. Results from this year?s Healthcare Data Management survey indicate that hospitals are still grappling with many of the same IT challenges they faced last year, particularly with regards to business continuity and disaster recovery.?

To combat these and other challenges, many hospitals are actively investing in data management technologies that give them more control over their information?a practice that has positive effects for several important areas of healthcare IT including: interoperability, data access, IT efficiency, reducing IT costs, energy efficiency and disaster recovery.

Other key findings from the survey:

• 65% said data volumes had increased over the previous year, 30% did not know how much data volumes had changed, and 5% said data volumes had decreased or stayed the same
• PACS applications were cited as the number-one reason for healthcare data growth (63%), followed by files held in the electronic health record (54%) and scanned documents such as proof of insurance (51%)
• 90% said their facilities had a plan to go at least partially paperless with their electronic patient records
• 32% said they planned to move to a new PACS within the next 5 years
• 64% said their organisations had some kind of disaster recovery strategy in place, but the majority (38%) had never been tested
• 35% said their facilities did not have a plan to reduce data centre carbon emissions
• 45% said their facilities were planning a major storage upgrade (1 TB or more) in the next year.

Google puts Chrome on iPhone and iPad

Google just did what many thought wasn't possible -- it just put mobile Chrome on iOS. Both iPad and iPhone users will get the app, either with incognito browsing, syncing and that unique tabbed browsing interface intact. The company hasn't said what's changed versus the Android build, but it's likely the main differences are matters of integration -- Apple's app rules won't let Google bring in its own WebKit rendering engine tweaks or change the default browser. Whether or not that switch is a dealbreaker, Chrome should be available later today in the App Store for those who want a break from the Safari norm.

On historic day at Supreme Court, U.S. citizens and world come to watch

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In sweltering Washington heat, more than 1,000 people from across the United States and around the world gathered outside the U.S. Supreme Court Thursday to await the court's decision on President Barack Obama's contested healthcare law.

The historic day proved a magnet not only for the media throngs but for belly-dancing protesters, flag-waving, bullhorn-wielding partisans on all sides and the now omni-present Tea Party sentinel in full Revolutionary War uniform.

The mood outside the court, which is across the street from the domed U.S. Capitol, was divided like the justices themselves, who ruled the health care law constitutional.

A pregnant Michelle Junessa, her husband Gabriel - a salesman from New Orleans - and their 3-year-old son, Austin, booked their flights to Washington two days ago hoping to witness a striking down of the entire law.

"We feel strongly about Obamacare not being put into place ... it's nerve racking," she said. "It needs to go, it needs to be reworked. It was too much too fast, shoving it down our throats."

A few feet away, Liz and Stan Lehman from Arkansas, who work as a nurse and medical imager respectively, sat watching the spectacle, taking in the competing chants of the pro- and anti-healthcare camps.

The Lehmans admitted they were uncomfortable with the law's individual mandate requiring Americans to buy health coverage or pay a penalty. However, they support the rest of the law - especially the provision protecting people with pre-existing conditions from being denied coverage.

Stan Lehman said being there reminded him of key moments during the U.S. civil rights movement a half century ago. "It's a biggie," he said as he looked toward the white marble court building.

Earlier, a gathering of young pro-Obama supporters had come out in full force toting signs reading: "I love Obama-care."

In their midst was Kristan Hawkins, the executive director of Students for Life America, an anti-abortion organization campaigning against the healthcare law. Hawkins, tried to counter the group's cheers, speaking intermittently into a megaphone.

"We have our protests actually down the street. I just chose to step here in the middle," she said, citing long-wait times for medical treatment in countries with universal healthcare, like Canada and Britain, as a main reason for her opposition to the law.

CROWD REACTS AS AMBULANCE ARRIVES

A few soft strains of people singing "God Bless America" filtered through the back of the crowd as it quieted down in anticipation of the court's ruling.

The decision, released just after 10 a.m. EDT, was greeted initially by a roar of approval and cheering from those in support. That was soon followed by a stereo blasting Obama's signature 2008 campaign song - Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed Delivered, I'm Yours".

Minutes later the police pushed the crowd back even further to make way for an ambulance that had just arrived. As a stretcher was pulled out, an officer told Reuters: "A lady has just had a heart attack. We've had a few people faint."

The rest of the morning belonged to the sounds of a rally, organized on the court steps by the conservative Tea Party movement and attended by Republican congresswoman Michele Bachmann.

The rally's chants of "November is coming!" and "We will repeal!" referred to the group's next hope: that presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney will be elected in the November election and will work to fulfill his pledge to repeal the law.

Inside the Supreme Court, tourists wearing Hawaiian shirts, shorts and baseball caps streamed past groups of men and women in dark suits clutching thick white copies of the decision.

At the entrance to the courtroom, where the nine justices' empty chairs loomed in the background, two young women in hijabs politely asked a bystander to take their photo.

Marwa Jamal and Ghofran Mansoub were visiting from Yemen - a country caught in the throes of the Arab Spring; its people struggling for their own rights.

Both women, informed by their own experiences, were struck by the order and civility of the scene outside the court.

"Today is a historical day. We saw the demonstrations and good for the American people today. Each people try fight for their rights and ask for their rights in their own way, peacefully," Jamal said. "We are going to send these photos home and say where we were when this decision happened."

REVEALED: Google's 7-Inch Tablet, The Nexus 7 - Business Insider

An image of Google's own Android tablet, the $199 Asus-built Nexus 7, has appeared on Google's image servers, The Verge reports.

You can find the image on Google's static image serve. The host?URL is identical to those of other hosted images on the Google Play store, like the Galaxy Nexus.

We don't know if this is the actual tablet, but it looks pretty likely. Several news outlets this morning reported the tablet would be built by Asus.

The device is a 7-inch tablet ? a similar size to the Kindle Fire ? that everyone was expecting.?It also looks like there's a modified user interface optimized for a 7-inch tablet also present on the device.

Care to Wager on the Supreme Court's ACA Ruling?

Some people can?t wait for the U.S. Supreme Court announcement of its ruling on the Obama Administration?s Affordable Care Act (aka health care reform law), so they are betting on the outcome.

Intrade, a popular online trading exchange, provides a platform for people to wager on whether or not future events will happen. More than 21,000 people have put money on the following: ?The U.S. Supreme Court to rule individual mandate unconstitutional before midnight ET 31 Dec 2012.? As of this writing, Intrade gives a 74.4 percent chance that the mandate will be struck down.

The Dublin-based site lets individuals buy shares if they think an event will happen and sell if they think it won?t. Events have defined end points. For example, if the Supreme Court rules the individual mandate unconstitutional, all shares will jump to $10 each and shareholders will be paid. If the opposite ruling is handed down, the shares will settle at $0. The site posts a probability of an event happening by converting share prices into a percentage. When shares of the Court?s ruling were selling at $7.81 per share, the probability was 78.1 percent.

The Supreme Court ruling event is one of the most active on the site this week. Other hotly traded markets are ?Barack Obama to be re-elected President in 2012,? a corresponding market for Mitt Romney, and ?Will the U.S. economy go into recession in 2012?? The site goes beyond politics, too, speculating in categories such as climate and weather. For example: ?Arctic sea ice extent for Sept. 2012 to be less than 4.3 million square kilometers.? Entertainment is fair game as well: ?The Dark Knight Rises to gross OVER $175.0M in opening weekend.?

Bettors on Intrade took a stab at the outcome of the U.S. presidential election in 2008, predicting electoral college votes almost exactly: They missed one of Nebraska?s votes, and forecast that McCain would win Indiana and Obama would take Missouri.* The two states each went to the opposite party, but their electoral vote tallies canceled out and InTrade?s prediction was nearly spot on. The site also boasts 97.89 percent prediction accuracy for the 2012 Academy Awards. For the movie industry?s big night, bettors traded almost $1.3 million and the winningest individual made $22,133.

Will the site?s Affordable Care Act prediction hold true? Less wager-happy spectators can simply await the court?s decision.

Screenwriter and Director Nora Ephron Dies at 71 - The Hollywood ...

Nora Ephron, the celebrated screenwriter and director, died of leukemia Tuesday evening in New York, according to The New York Times.

The news followed an afternoon in which it was reported that she was gravely ill, though her?agency CAA and publisher Knopf denied earlier reports that she had died.

Ephron, best known for penning the screenplay for When Harry Met Sally ??(1989) and then writing and directing Sleepless in Seattle?(1989)?and?You've Got Mail (1998), had not been reported as ill before a story from gossip columnist Liz Smith -- which repeatedly referred to the 71-year-old in the past tense while never pronouncing her dead.

Smith's story was soon edited, but when speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Smith said that she'd spoken with Ephron's son Jacob Bernstein.

?I was told this morning that she was dying, but I can?t confirm it,? she said. Smith went on to say that Bernstein told her that the family was planning for the funeral. But when no confirmation of Ephron?s death was forthcoming, Smith revised what she wrote.

?I have had to put everything in the present tense,? she wrote. ?It?s bad enough that she?s dying, but I don?t want to be the cause for everyone to grieve in advance."

Passing along the news that she said she received from Smith, columnist Margo Howard tweeted, "Well, to those of you who can't find the news of Nora Ephron's death, the funeral is Thursday - and maybe that's the way she wanted it."

The daughter of Hollywood screenwriters, Ephron established herself as an original voice with an idiosyncratic take on modern manners with the personal essays she wrote in the 1960s for such publications as New York, Esquire and the New York Times Magazine. She made her feature screenwriting debut in 1983 with Mike Nichols' Silkwood. Her screenplays for Silkwood, Harry and Sleepless all earned Oscar nominations.

Ephron moved into directing with the 1992 feature This Is My Life, the story of a stand-up comic starring Julie Kavner. The following year, Sleepless proved to be a huge hit, making Ephron one of Hollywood's few successful woman directors. Most recently, she directed 2009's Julie & Julia, which starred her frequent collaborator Meryl Streep as Julia Child.

Ephron was married to writer Nicholas Pileggi and has two sons, Jacob and Max Bernstein, from her previous marriage to investigative reporter Carl Bernstein.

Parents Of Sophie Roberts, Toddler With Liver Cancer, Aim To ...

Two-year-old Sophie Roberts has been battling a rare form of liver cancer for about half of her life. Out of treatment options in the United Kingdom, her parents are now on a mission to raise nearly $360,000 for a potentially life-saving surgery in the United States.

Last year, Sophie was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma, a form of liver cancer that is usually caught before a patient turns 2 years old, according to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The incidence rate is about 0.9 in 1 million.

Unfortunately, by the time doctors found Sophie's tumor, the cancer had spread to the young girl's lungs. Months after chemotherapy, Sophie underwent surgery to remove the tumor, which resulted in the loss of 1/4 of her liver, according to the website, Sophie Roberts' Story.

Soon after recovery and more chemotherapy to treat several lung metastases, Sophie's parents, Andrew and Ruth, learned the cancer had returned and that surgery was likely the only treatment option.

But two medical teams in the United Kingdom told the couple they would not perform the operation, believing they would not be able to fully remove the cancer.

That's when the couple reached out to a team of doctors at New York City's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center who said they would give it a try.

The family needs to raise the money for the operation by July 13. So far, they've managed to raise a portion of that by remortgaging their home and accepting funds from family and friends, according to Metro UK.

Sophie's parents have also set up a donation page on the fundraising site Just Giving in hopes well-wishers will contribute to their daughter's operation. As of early afternoon on June 27, nearly 3,100 donations had been received, totaling more than $227,000.

Online ventures have proven popular among parents striving to solicit help or support for their children.

Earlier this month, one mother made headlines after asking parents to serve their children ice cream for dinner simply to see them smile.

Diane Roberts' son, Ryan, was born with Down syndrome and a congenital heart defect. When doctors said they could no longer do anything to help the baby boy, one of Diane's friends, Melissa Neidhardt, took to Facebook and asked all parents to join "Ryan's Banana Split Party."

Users sent messages and posted photos of their families eating the delicious treat in Ryan's honor.

Similarly, mother Shasta Kearns Moore took to the fundraising site Kickstarter to sell her children's book, "Dark & Light: A Love Story For Babies... And The People Who Read To Them," and raise money for her 2-year-old son's cerebral palsy treatments.
