Ways to Speed Up PC

Life today is different. It is so fast that everything is changing in an instant. Technology has changed a lot and has affected the lives of most people in the world. The PC is now part of the daily lives of each people. This is what people use for work, chat with friends, research for information and go to social networking sites to meet new friends. You can't imagine life without a PC. But what if it is so slow, how can you cope up with the fast pace in the world? It is time to speed up PC. It must be competitive and perform fast to be able to use it properly.

- To speed up PC, make sure you check your hardware and it is sufficient enough to enable Windows to function well. Evaluate all your files if you really need them in your PC. Some files are not so important and consume space in your hard disk. Clean your folders and delete those that you don't need anymore. Do a regular scan of your registry to make sure you can detect immediately possible errors that would affect your operating system. Clean or repair immediately if you discover something wrong in your registry. Schedule a regular virus scan of your system and make sure your antivirus protection is updated. You must update it regularly to make sure your PC has the latest defense against harmful viruses and software

- Remove. games that you don't play anymore. It is advisable to install one game at a time. Don't install many games at the same time. It will need large amount of hard disk space and performance of your PC will be affected. Concentrate on one game then if you finish it you can remove it already. If you want another game then you can install it provided that you have uninstalled the previous one.. Uninstall programs that you don't need anymore. Free up some space in your hard disk by doing this.

- You can also adjust some features in your PC to enhance its performance. The visual effects can be reduced to suit your PC's capacity. Don't overdo your effects, use only those that are appropriate for your use. Automatic start of programs is also affecting the PC's speed. If several programs automatically start at the same time then you can expect a very slow start-up for your PC. Several windows will pop out asking you to connect to the internet or log in. You must set your programs to start only if you want it to avoid constant popping out in your screen.

- Defragment of the hard drive is the best thing to do to speed up PC. This will enable your files to be organized properly inside your hard disk. This will help the PC to read your files easily. This will help your PC to perform faster and efficiently. You will always want your PC to perform at a level that is so high to meet your expectations from it.

DNP Google hires designers from Cuban Council to work on Google

The folks at Mountain View have worked with the well regarded designers at Cuban Council before, but now Google is taking the partnership one step further by hiring several of the firm's employees. The search giant has acquired the contracts of a number of the company's designers explicitly to work on Google+. The details of the deal haven't been revealed, so we have no idea how many members of the staff will be setting sail for the shores of Goog or how much the psuedo acquisition set the company back. But, we do know that at least some of the firm that once designed the Facebook logo, Evernote's website, Rdio's mobile apps and helped define the beautiful WebOS UI will now be dedicated to keeping Google+ ahead of the aesthetic curve.

Brian Montgomery wrote an interesting post today on
Here?s a quick excerpt
The changes to the HARP program that
were put in place last fall seem to be having an affect according to data
released this morning by the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA).?? The Administration made significant ?enhancements?
to the Home Affordable Refinance Program administered by FHFA after the
original program launched in 2009 failed to attract the volume of borrowers
originally anticipated.?
HARP 2.0, as the new version of the
program is commonly called, eliminated any eligibility ceiling on loan-to-value
(LTV) ratios and some risk based fees for borrowers who refinanced into
short-term mortgages and reduced fees for other borrowers.? The new program also waived some of the
representations and warranties required of lenders, and eliminated the need for
a new property appraisal where a reliable automated valuation model estimate of
value was available.
No doubt aided by record low interest
rates, HARP refinancing has taken off in the last few months.? The program was responsible for 20 percent of

Midwest drought = higher food prices

Seth Perlman / AP

Steve Niedbalski shows his drought and heat stricken corn in Nashville Ill. Farmers in parts of the Midwest are dealing with the worst drought in nearly 25 years.

By Eve Tahmincioglu

Shoppers across the country should stand up and take notice of the Midwestern drought that has already hurt supplies of corn and soybeans.

The drought will lead to higher prices when you head to the supermarket?for everything from milk to meat.?How high will depend on what happens with rain and high temperatures in the Corn Belt in the next few weeks.

?We?re at the cusp of seeing how severely this is going to impact consumer prices,? said Darrel Good, professor emeritus of agricultural and consumer economics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

The drought and heat, he continued, ?has already done permanent damage to the crops but our concern is the outlook for the weather is not very good and we?re expecting a further deterioration.?

If that happens, he continued, ?Prices will go up ever higher and have more severe and long-lasting impacts.?

In a pricing twist that may sound counterintuitive, prices in the next few weeks for certain products may end up being major deals as a result of the drought.

For example, you may want to make room in your freezer for meat because prices for beef and pork are expected to drop in the next few months as farmers slaughter herds to deal with the high cost of grains that are used as livestock feed, said Shawn Hackett of the agricultural commodities firm Hackett Financial Advisors Inc., in Boynton Beach, Fla. But, he added, everything from milk to salad dressings are going to cost you more in the near term, and in the long term the meat deals will evaporate as demand outstrips supply.?

Agriculture experts and economists largely agree that the weather conditions are expected to hurt corn crops, and in turn will impact retail prices in the weeks ahead. But we won?t know the full impact of the drought until early August or September, said Richard Volpe, research economist for the Economic Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Rain is in short supply across most of the country and you could be paying the price for it at the grocery store. NBC's Janet Shamlian reports.

?We don?t yet know what?s going to happen and we don?t yet know how severe the drought will be and the amount we end up getting at the end of the corn harvest,? he stressed.

The USDA provides monthly estimates of food prices but the June data showing increases of less than 5 percent for key items such as dairy and meat products does not take the recent grain issues into account. Updated figures on the drought?s impact will be released July 25.

Volpe wouldn?t provide specific projections based on conditions now, but he did say price increases for milk, that were expected to be flat or decline this year, could head up ?if there?s a major jump in feed prices.?

At this point, he added, ?there?s been enough damage that we know we?re not going to have a record crop in field corn. Now the question is, how far below the record crop is this going to fall? What happens in next two weeks will drive what happens to corn and that will have an affect on all food prices.?

Field corn, also known as feed corn -- which is different from the sweet corn many of us eat during our barbecues -- is in about 74 percent of the foods consumers buy in supermarkets, he pointed out.

This year, corn supplies were expected to be more than ample because many growers in the Corn Belt -- including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska and Minnesota -- increased acreage of the crop to meet growing global demand, said John Riley, assistant extension professor at Mississippi State University. ?But it will now fall short because of the drought and heat,? he noted.

The price for a bushel of corn hit?$7.48 a bushel at the Chicago Board of Trade this week, and government figures now project this year and next that a bushel will be as much as?$6.40 a bushel, up significantly from last month's projections of $4.20 to $5 a bushel.

The expected rise in food prices is nothing new for consumers. ?Food price inflation in 2011 was well above normal,? explained Corinne Alexander, an agricultural economist at Purdue University. Grocery store food inflation was 4.8 percent last year, she said, and the expectations were of about 2 percent this year.

?The drought means above normal food price inflation in 2012, and going into 2013,? he noted.

While prices for processed foods such as cereal are not expected to rise considerably unless the shortages get much worse because producers had already instituted huge price hike last year, she continued.

But, she added, the cost of things like oil and salad dressing are likely to rise because soybean crops have also been impacted.

The food-price roller coaster is a scary ride consumers have been on for some time. There have been tight supplies going back to 2006, said Mississippi State?s Riley. ?Weather events and a bump up in demand for corn for renewable fuel,? he explained, have all contributed to the problem.

When asked if consumers should start praying for rain, he said, ?any rain moving forward is a blessing and is going to help, but I don?t know if it?s going to make it better.?

A look at how soaring corn price could impact your grocery bill, with CNBC's Jackie DeAngelis.

(AP) ? Syria on Sunday denied U.N. claims that government forces used heavy weapons during a military operation that left scores dead and brought immediate international condemnation, while the International Committee of the Red Cross said it now considers the conflict in the country a civil war.

Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said the violence Thursday was not a massacre ? as activists and many foreign leaders have asserted ? but a military operation targeting armed fighters who had taken control of the village of Tremseh.

"What happened wasn't an attack on civilians," Makdissi told reporters in Damascus. He said 37 gunmen and two civilians were killed ? a far lower death toll than the one put forward by anti-regime activists, some of whom estimate that more than 100 people were killed.

"What has been said about the use of heavy weapons is baseless," Makdissi added.

But the United Nations has already implicated Assad's forces in the assault. The head of the U.N. observer mission said Friday that monitors stationed near Tremseh saw the army using heavy weaponry and attack helicopters.

Although there has been a string of horrific attacks in Syria over the course of the uprising, the violence appears to be escalating. On Sunday, the International Committee of the Red Cross said it now deems the conflict in Syria a civil war, meaning international humanitarian law applies throughout the country.

The Geneva-based group's assessment is an important reference that helps parties in a conflict determine how much and what type of force they can or cannot use.

ICRC spokesman Hicham Hassan said Sunday that humanitarian law now applies wherever hostilities are taking place in Syria, where fighting has spread beyond the hotspots of Idlib, Homs and Hama. International humanitarian law grants parties to a conflict the right to use appropriate force to achieve their aims. But attacks on civilians and abuse or killing of detainees can constitute war crimes.

On Saturday, U.N. observers investigating the killings in Tremseh found pools of blood in homes and spent bullets, mortars and artillery shells, adding details to the emerging picture of what anti-regime activists have called one of the deadliest events of Syria's uprising. The observers were expected to return to the village Sunday.

Dozens of people have already been buried in a mass grave, and activists are still struggling to determine the total number of people killed in what they say was a bombardment by government tanks and helicopters on Thursday.

Some of the emerging details suggested that, rather than the outright shelling of civilians that the opposition has depicted, the violence in Tremseh may have been a lopsided fight between the army pursuing the opposition and activists and locals trying to defend the village. Nearly all of the dead are men, including dozens of armed rebels. The U.N. observers said the assault appeared to target specific homes of army defectors or opposition figures.

Running tolls ranged from around 100 to 152, including dozens of bodies buried in neighboring villages or burned beyond recognition. The activists expected the number to rise since hundreds of residents remain unaccounted for, and locals believe bodies remained in nearby fields or were dumped into the Orontes River.

Independent verification of the events is nearly impossible in Syria, one of the Middle East's strictest police states, which bars most media from working independently in the country. The observers are in the country as part of a faltering peace plan by U.N. special envoy Kofi Annan, who has been trying for months to negotiate a solution to Syria's crisis.

The Tremseh violence was the latest in a string of bloody attacks in the now 16-month-old uprising against Assad, in which activists say more than 17,000 people have been killed.

On Saturday, an 11-vehicle team of U.N. observers entered Tremseh, home to between 6,000-10,000 residents and one of a string of small farming villages along the Orontes River northwest of the city of Hama.

Based on its investigation, the team said in a statement that "an attack" took place on July 12. It said the violence seemed to target the homes of army defectors and activists, some of which were burned or damaged and had pooled or splattered blood and bullet casings inside.

Although much of the international community has turned on Assad, Damascus still has some key allies ? including Russia and Iran. The Kremlin announced Sunday that Annan will meet President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday.

Also Sunday, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said Tehran is ready to invite Syrian opposition groups and government envoys for talks, the semiofficial ISNA news agency reported.

Any proposal from Iran is likely to be rebuffed by rebel groups, which have rejected negotiations with Assad's government and have criticized Tehran for standing by its allies in Damascus. But the offer suggested Iran is seeking a more active role in mediation efforts following a visit last week to Tehran Annan, who is seeking to keep alive his flagging peace efforts.

German state buys Swiss data to track tax frauds: FT

BERLIN (Reuters) - Authorities in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia have bought a CD from Switzerland containing wealthy Germans' bank details as part of a drive to identify tax evaders, the Financial Times Deutschland said in its online edition on Saturday.

The CD contains the names and bank details of some 1,000 wealthy Germans who are customers of the Zurich branch of Coutts, the private banking arm of Britain's Royal Bank of Scotland best known as banker to Britain's Queen Elizabeth, the paper said, citing inside information.

It can be assumed that these customers avoided paying large amounts of tax, the paper said.

"We are aware of the continued media speculation regarding a potential breach of client data secrecy at Coutts," a spokeswoman for Coutts said.

"Following thorough investigation, we have no evidence to suggest any such breach has taken place," she added.

The state finance ministry neither confirmed nor denied that it had purchased the CD.

"We have no indication that this is correct," said Mario Tuor, spokesman for the Swiss governmental unit tasked with negotiating the tax dispute.

The origin of the CD was not clear but in 2010 several German states including North Rhine-Westphalia said they had bought CDs containing Swiss banking data from whistleblowers to help identify German tax evaders. This led thousands of Germans to declare their financial holdings to avoid risking jail sentences.

North Rhine-Westphalia paid 3.5 million euros for the CD, according to the FTD, in a move which threatens to further sour already strained relations between the two countries on tax issues.

Germany reached an agreement with Switzerland last September to levy taxes on German assets in Swiss bank accounts that is due to come into effect next year pending German parliament approval. As part of the deal Germany will no longer be allowed to buy CDs containing tax data.

"We cannot agree to the planned tax agreement with Switzerland as it stands and without the approval of states ruled by the Social Democrats and Greens, it cannot come into effect," said Norbert Walter-Borjans, finance minister of the North Rhine-Westphalia, which is run by Social Democrats.

"It is therefore only logical that we don't need to act as if the agreement already applied," he told Reuters.

German tax authorities raided Credit Suisse clients and French officials searched the homes of UBS employees this week, deepening the crackdown on foreigners hiding money in Swiss offshore accounts to dodge taxes.

Walter-Borjans said the raids showed it was necessary to obtain information by purchasing CDs in order to uncover tax evasion.

Amped Wireless High Power Wireless-N Directional Dual Band USB Adapter UA2000

  • Amped Wireless High Power Wireless-N Directional Dual Band USB Adapter UA2000
  • Config Utility

Amped Wireless' High Power Wireless-N Directional Dual-Band USB Adapter (UA2000) ($90 direct) is an 802.11n dual-band USB adapter. USB adapters are used to give wireless connectivity to a computer that may not have a wireless card, such as an older desktop or a laptop. They can also be used to connect a machine with an older networking card to newer 802.11n wireless networks. Amped succeeds reasonably well at these tasks, and it also offers some useful additional features.

It's easy to install and, in my testing, extended my wireless range to a dead-spot when paired with Amped Wireless' High Power Wireless-N 600mW Gigabit Dual Band Router (R20000G). The UA2000 adapter is unique in that unlike most USB wireless adapters, it's a larger device that can stand atop a desk or clip to a notebook?it's not, in other words,? a small stick that fits into a USB port. Its large size makes it awkward to clip to a laptop screen and it can take up a good portion of the viewing area (especially since the vendor recommends facing it in the direction of the router for optimal performance) so it's not ideal for clipping to smaller netbooks and notebooks on the front of the screen.?

Another unique feature is that the adapter has two USB connectors. Connecting to two USB ports increases the power to the adapter, and as per the vendor, can maximize performance. You can, however, still use the adapter connected to just one USB port.

Setup
The adapter ships with a well-documented setup guide. The first and most critical step is to install the software before connecting the adapter. The UA2000 is supported on Windows and Mac OS X.

The CD automatically launches a splash page that allows you to install the software, watch an installation video, register the product, install a free Wi-Fi analytics tool, read user guides, or go to Web support. Plus, the splash page opens with a charming chime sound that makes the set up process quite an elegant affair.

Selecting the install software option actually installs the Amped Wireless Utility. When complete, you can connect the adapter to the machine.

I connected the adapter to two USB ports on an HP EliteBook 8440w running Windows 7. The HP notebook already has an on-board wireless adapter (which I use for testing routers). I was pleased to see that the Amped Wireless utility detected there were two cards and popped up a message asking me to disable a card. However, the message kept popping up now and again even after I disabled the on-board adapter; clearly a little more development work is needed there.

Completing installation requires a reboot. When the machine restarts, there is now an Amped Wireless Utility icon in the System Tray. Right-clicking on the icon gives three options: Launch Config Utility, Switch to AP Mode, and Exit.

(AP) ? The chief executive of an Iowa-based brokerage firm admitted in a suicide note that he carried out an elaborate fraud scheme in which he embezzled more than $100 million from customers over nearly two decades, federal investigators said Friday.

FBI agents arrested Peregrine Financial Group Inc. Russell Wasendorf Sr. on Friday and he appeared in federal court later in the day on charges that accuse him of falsifying bank records.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter Deegan said during the hearing in Cedar Rapids that the 64-year-old executive could face "a wide range of criminal charges" for what investigators say was a $200 million scheme in which Wasendorf embezzled customer funds for 20 years.

Federal prosecutors unsealed a criminal complaint charging Wasendorf and released documents detailing a wide-ranging fraud scheme that apparently fooled colleagues, customers and regulators for years.

Wasendorf had been hospitalized after attempting suicide outside the company's headquarters in Cedar Falls on Monday by hooking up a tube to his car's tailpipe. He appeared healthy and was wearing street clothes during his brief court appearance Friday, and the judge scheduled a hearing for Wednesday to determine whether Wasendorf should be held in jail pending his trial.

His company filed for bankruptcy Tuesday, the same day the industry's top regulator filed civil fraud charges alleging the firm misused customer money and falsely claimed a bank account contained more than $220 million when it actually had about $5 million. The money in that account belonged to customers, and was supposed to be kept separate from Peregrine's own money.

Officials from another industry regulator, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, were on site at Peregrine's Cedar Falls offices to examine the firm Friday. The agency regulates broker-dealers that buy and sell stocks. The losses apparently are centered in the part of Peregrine that sold commodity options and futures.

An affidavit by FBI agent William Langdon, made public with the criminal complaint, says authorities found Wasendorf unresponsive Monday in his vehicle, along with a suicide note addressed to his wife and a signed statement in which he detailed his fraud.

"Through a scheme of using false bank statements I have been able to embezzle millions of dollars from customer accounts at Peregrine Financial Group, Inc. The forgeries started nearly twenty years ago and have gone undetected until now. I was able to conceal my crime of forgery by being the sole individual with access to the US Bank accounts held by PFG," he wrote in the note, according to court documents.

Wasendorf said that he faced "a difficult decision" when his access to capital was limited earlier in his career.

"Should I go out of business or cheat? I guess my ego was too big to admit failure," he wrote. "So I cheated, I falsified the very core of the financial documents of PFG, the bank statements."

Wasendorf said he used computer software, scanners and printers to "make very convincing forgeries of nearly every document that came from the bank," including statements, letters and other correspondence, the affidavit says.

"I could create forgeries very quickly so no one suspected that my forgeries were not the real thing that had just arrived in the mail," he wrote.

He said he used "careful concealment and blunt authority" as the company's founder and sole shareholder to hide the fraud. He said he ordered bank statements be delivered directly to him unopened, that he was the only person with access to the firm's online bank account, and he told the bank that he was the only representative they should call, according to court documents.

Wasendorf said he also fooled regulators checking how much money his company held by opening a Cedar Falls post office box in 2006 in the name of US Bank, an address he put on the counterfeit bank statements he created. Auditors mailed confirmation forms to the address, and he sent phony documents back showing the accounts contained "the amount I needed to show."

"When online banking became prevalent, I learned how to falsify online bank statements and the regulators accepted them without question," he added.

Wasendorf confirmed that he wrote the statement and that it was true during an interview with investigators Monday at the hospital in Iowa City, Langdon wrote. He estimated "the amount of loss due to his fraud exceeded $100 million," Langdon added.

The criminal complaint alleges that Wasendorf made false statements to the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission about the value of customer funds held by his company from 2010 until recently.

In his statement, Wasendorf claimed he acted alone by creating counterfeit statements hours after receiving the real ones, giving forgeries to the accounting department, the affidavit says. A PFG employee responsible for reconciling the firm's customer fund accounts told investigators that she used account balances that were already entered in an internal accounting system, the affidavit said.

Wasendorf's son, Russ Wasendorf, Jr., the company's president and chief operating officer, also received a copy of the statement from his father admitting to the fraud at his office Monday, the FBI affidavit said. He told authorities he checked his father's claims by obtaining a bank statement that showed a balance of $6.3 million ? an account that regulators were told had $221.7 million as of December.

The criminal charges are a stunning downfall for Wasendorf, who was well known in Chicago and Iowa financial circles. He ran the company for years from Chicago before moving the company in 2009 to a $24 million new headquarters in Cedar Falls, where he was a highly regarded businessman and philanthropist.

In its bankruptcy filing, the firm listed assets of between $500 million and $1 billion and liabilities between $100 million and $500 million. The firm said that it had at least 10,000 creditors. It filed under Chapter 7, which means the firm intends to liquidate its assets to pay creditors. The company had about 70 employees.
