How Leaders Should Follow the News - Business Management Daily

Every month seems to bring big news that we must watch or read. The news media is, after all, in the advertising business, so they do the best job they can to entice us to watch and read their latest ?top story.? And while the number of viewing options has grown, and the number of ways we can consume the news has changed, we are still watching.

Yep that?s us, watching and reading the news.

I?ve found that people have a variety of opinions about the news, ranging from ?I need to stay on top of what?s going on? to ?I don?t want to watch any of it?it depresses me.? Many purveyors of positive thinking and time management advice lean toward the later response?either ?don?t watch it because it is all negative? or ?watching it is largely a waste of time.?

I agree with both of those viewpoints ? to a point.

As leaders, whatever group or organizations we are leading, we need to have an understanding of what is going on around us. We need to be informed, aware and observant. As leaders we must have inputs that inform us about the world around us so that we can make (or help others make) better decisions. Yet I agree that too much news is a waste of time and will possibly dampen your positive thinking or outlook.

What is my answer to this balancing act then?

I can only accurately tell you what I try to do to walk this balance beam. Consider these six strategies:

  • Limit your input. Think of your news input like a part of your thinking diet (which it is). Determine what you need to know, then turn it off, turn the page, or turn off your device. One way to do this is to use some technology, from email to newsfeeds or whatever, to get headlines. Headlines may be all you need for awareness. This also means not getting sucked into long water cooler conversations about the news of the day that don?t serve you or your thinking.
  • Pick key sources. Pick news source(s) you find helpful. Along with general news, think about what you need for your business or work. That might mean The Wall Street Journal or a daily source in your industry. ?By picking key sources you help limit total intake too.
  • Choose different first daily inputs. The first thoughts of your day are extra important. Don?t make the negative news of the day be your first input.
  • Look for the positives. The news media leads with negative, because negative sells (remember what business they are in). That doesn?t mean there aren?t positives?it just means we may need to look for them. Consider this good practice: the practice of looking for opportunities that exist in every challenge or problem.
  • Think critically about what you read/watch. Don?t just take it in?think about whether or not you agree with the assertions, conclusions or perspectives of the reporters and think about the implications for you and your organization. Ask yourself, ?What is the message and importance of this to us in our business, community, (etc.)??
  • Look for learning. How can you use this information? How does it connect to your experience? Specifically as a leader, what are you seeing leaders do well that you would like to emulate in your world, and what do you avoid completely? When you watch the news through this mental filter, it isn?t a time-waster at all, it is real-time learning.

Regardless of your current news consumption habits, I hope this has been helpful. Think about the news as an opportunity for information, but also thinking and learning. Leaders are synthesizers of news, not just consumers of it.

Why Our Edcamp Failed - Finding Common Ground - Education Week

"We always talk about how failure is good but never give examples of how we actually fail." Jessica Johnson

On December 1st 2012, educators from around the state of New Jersey got together for an Edcamp. For months leading up to the event there was a buzz on social media. Teachers, principals and other staff that work in schools were Tweeting how they couldn't wait for the Saturday event. From an outside perspective, it was a very successful edcamp. They had presenters, participants and prizes. As a neighbor to the north, I was green with envy.

As a fan of professional development I love when teachers and administrators share best practices, which is probably why I am hooked on Twitter. In the district where I am a principal, I have created a couple of inservices where teachers shared their best practices and it was an awesome experience. The collective thoughts of a group are much more engaging and powerful than the thoughts of one person in the front of the classroom.

Given the power of Edcamp New Jersey, I decided to take a risk and create an edcamp for the school district where I work. As an elementary school principal, it's intimidating to put myself out there for the whole district because if it failed, I was worried I would take it personally. Plus, the staff in other schools don't know me like my staff does.

In preparation, I wrote a blog called Edcamps; The New Professional Development and used it as a blueprint as a plan for our district edcamp. In the blog I wrote,

"Money is short, and many of us have always believed that our best resources are within our own schools...or we probably wouldn't have hired them in the first place. Schools can create their own Edcamp for teachers and administrators within their district. If the district is too large, they can be separated by elementary, middle and high school. The best thing about an Edcamp is that they are open to the flexibility of the person organizing the event."

There was only one problem...it failed.

Jessica Johnson, an elementary principal in Wisconsin and an important member of my PLN, once said in a Tweet that "we always talk about how failure is good but never give examples of how we actually fail." So in an effort to help you succeed, and perhaps help me succeed the next time, I wanted to provide the steps I took on my Titanic-type voyage to a district-wide Edcamp.

The Plan
In late September/early October I spoke with the K-12 admin team about doing an Edcamp. I already spoke to Lynn, our Director of Technology and a person who constantly helps stretch my thinking. Lynn was highly supportive of the Edcamp and her two-member team began coming up with ideas of what we could do. They went off to their tech-cave and began hashing a plan.

I put out an e-mail to the whole district and said when the first meeting of the Edcamp team would take place. I used my edcamp blog as a reference along with other resources so they understood what an edcamp was because some people had never heard of one. At the first meeting, 12 people showed up. It was a mixture of technology staff (there are only 3 of them) district administration, building administration and teachers. Most of the teachers were the staff I work with every day so I appreciated their support.

In our meeting we came up with a date of Saturday, February 9th and decided to hold the edcamp from 9 am to noon. We wanted a mid-winter edcamp so people could get a break from the cold weather. Some of the committee members came up with the following ideas:
? Wordle - it combined all the words we could think of to describe an edcamp.

? Edcamp logo - we knew we needed to market the idea and every marketing campaign includes a great logo.
? Webpage - we wanted a place where people could go to read resources and get a feel for an edcamp so they wouldn't be intimidated to attend or present.
? E-mail address - We created an address where people could send their presentation ideas or interest in participating.
? In-service credit - We offered inservice credit for those staff members who attended and doubled it for those who presented.

For all intents and purposes, we thought our district-wide edcamp would be successful. After all, it was a trending idea in many states around the country. Unfortunately, over a two month period we heard from about 8 people who said they would attend, and most of those were on the committee. One person wondered if an administrator would present, and two teachers said they would present. After a couple of months, a few reminder e-mails, and a final deadline to present, we cancelled the edcamp. So, why did it fail?

What Happened!
Like usual, I consulted with the teachers I work with every day. We always have open dialogue about our success and failures. The following were some of the issues they had and others that I came up with through my own reflection.

? Timing - I started the edcamp campaign at the end of September/early October which was the same time teachers finished completing their first ever state-mandated Student Learning Objectives (SLO). They didn't have time to consider attending and presenting.

? Accountability - This school year has been like no other because of the accountability we are all under. It's not an excuse but a reality. Teachers feel stifled and worry about doing one more thing. At a time when we should be inspiring creativity, accountability is killing it for some people.

? The Common Core (CCSS) - This was the first year in the CCSS implementation for certain grade levels and they are more concerned about doing the Common Core correctly than trying to present at an edcamp.

? Burnout - The year began with so many state-mandated accountability measures that people just didn't feel like doing one more thing, regardless of whether it was a good idea or not.

? Social Media - One of the reasons why edcamps are trending ideas around the country is because they are being done at a state-level, not necessarily a district-level. Social media plays a huge part in it because most of the attendees and all of the presenters are on Twitter and the excitement builds naturally over months through those on-line conversations.

We will try a district-wide edcamp again because our committee heard from staff after it was cancelled. Ironically, upstate New York was hit with a huge snowstorm through the Saturday the edcamp was supposed to take place, so it would have been cancelled any way. However, as we all know, we can learn many important lessons through failure, and I definitely learned some things through this one.

Everything is possible if you really want it to be possible. Sometimes we tell ourselves it?s impossible before we even attempt to do it. Sometimes when we see something happen so easy, we cannot believe it because it is too good to be true, right? We do not allow ourselves to believe that anything can be possible, especially when you see others doing it. When there is proof, the only thing stopping you is belief.

Even though you might see a lot of people making money online, you probably still do not believe it can happen to you and that it could not work for you. Before you even run all the way with it, you already give up, you already failed. You only got one life to live! So why not try to make money online and make it while you take your family to the Bahamas for the week? Because an online business gives you the opportunity to make money on autopilot, it gives you the real freedom any other J.O.B. cannot give you!

You know that you only got one life to live right? I say that again because I really want to emphasize what it means. Especially what it means to you; think about your life and about the thing you?ve accomplished so far. If you can pull out a note-book and write this process down.

Are you making good money? And I?m not talking about just having a job that lets you get by every month. If you are living paycheck to paycheck, you are not the only one. More than 50% of the population in the USA lives paycheck to paycheck and most of them do not have more than $500 in their bank account.

If all you have is a little less than $500 in your bank account right now and an emergency shows up, where you need a lot of money, what are you going to do? Of course you will get out of that situation, you will get by, it will be a huge hustle but you will be okay. BUT then would you like to be in that situation again? And again? ?Of course NOT!

What are you going to avoid getting into that situation where you cannot pay your way out? You will make more money, and fast money. How are you going to do that? Well you are going to learn the skills of making money online, the skill of selling products online on autopilot. It is possible! Believe it because I will teach you how in this article.

I will tell you straight up right now; I?d rather spend my money on this education than on college. Why? Well because I know that the skills of making money online will make me more money for the long run and on autopilot, rather than spending years and years going through books for a degree and earn 6 figures a month working full time. Most internet marketers earn 6 figures a month and the most skilled marketers can make up to 6 figures a day!

If I was you, I would invest in the best education that will teach you how to make money online every single day. Like for everything in this life, you need to invest in your education if you want to learn a skill. If you want to learn how to make money online then you need to invest in the education. Company goes to the dogs, to fight foul breath

Here's a story about a personal hygiene startup with a sense of humor, which may have figured out the way to big profits is through a dog's mouth.

Orabrush sells tongue brushes for humans using an unappealing mascot called Morgan the Talking Tongue. He's both creepy and hilarious.

The company said most bacteria that causes bad breath is on the tongue, not in the teeth. Tongue scraping is a common practice in other parts of the world, but Orabrush CEO Jeff Davis admits it's been a bit of a tough sell in the U.S. "We still have some work to do."

So the company is going to the dogs.

Read More: San Francisco's Puppy Problem

After customers suggested Orabrush create a tongue cleaner for dogs, the company started a crowdfunding page on IndieGogo to build awareness, gauge interest, and take pre-orders for what they called the Orapup.

"We had a target raise of $40,000," said Davis. "We were up for 60 days, and earned $60,000, exceeding our target. But most importantly we knew we had consumer demand and high interest from passionate dog owners."

That was last fall. It took several months for company founder Dr. Bob Wagstaff to perfect the Orapup brush and the syrupy paste, which kills bacteria. He needed to make sure the product would be easy to use and enjoyable for dogs.

How does it work? You don't have to put anything into the dog's mouth. Instead, dog owners squeeze a small bit of paste onto the large brush with short bristles, and then dogs voluntarily licks it for at least a minute.

"It takes what was a disastrous kind of frustrating experience for pet owners to try to clean their mouth and it's like a treat," CEO Davis said. The paste tastes like beef and bacon. "I've tried it myself," he added, "and it's not too bad."

Six months later, the Orapup has launched with $750,000 in pre-orders. Davis was gushing about it to me. "I have to tell you, if you get a chance to use it Jane, it's an incredible bonding experience with your pet."

Really?

I decided to try the Orapup on my two dogs, Eeyore and Princess Leia. Being basset hounds, they have terrible breath. Terrible. Ter. I. Bull.

In the video, you'll see how it went. Eeyore was a little reluctant at first before going to town licking the brush. Leia jumped right in. One day later, their breath no longer triggers nausea, though they don't exactly smell of minty freshness.

Davis said Orabrush is considering developing tongue brushes for other domesticated animals. The company thinks pet products may be more profitable than tongue brushes for humans. "Based on Orapup's metrics today, on our online e-commerce model, Orapup will probably be bigger."

The CEO came to Orabrush after 23 years at Proctor & Gamble, and he said he had to learn to do everything in reverse. Instead of making a product and testing it before launch, Orabrush gets suggestions and feedback from consumers first, then builds a brand and takes pre-orders online before a product is manufactured. Its entire business model is built around social media.

"We are one of the top subscribed sponsored, branded channels on YouTube. I always say I like being sixth or seventh in this crowd because we have brands like Apple, OldSpice, GoPro, RedBull, Pixar, Disney ? these are incredibly iconic branded names," Davis said.

He believes Orabrush could eventually be acquired. "I would expect someone would want to take us to the next level."

But for the moment, the company is focused on building the brand and making new products, in that order. "Proctor & Gamble taught me a lot about strategy and discipline, and in the startups and smaller companies, it's a little bit about creativity and chaos."
