June 1 restart could be out of reach at San Onofre

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A tentative plan to get the troubled San Onofre nuclear power plant back in service by June 1 might be too much, too soon.

Operator Southern California Edison is finalizing a proposal to get the Unit 2 reactor fired up by June 1, in time to help with summer power demand.

But federal regulators Wednesday warned company officials at a meeting in Maryland that its target date might be out of reach. The case is complex, so that timeline could be unrealistic.

Environmentalists say restarting the damaged plant would set the stage for disaster.

The plant between Los Angeles and San Diego has been shut down since January 2012, after a small radiation leak led to the discovery of unusual damage to tubing that carries radioactive water.
