Rahul Dravid shows trust on Dhoni?s captaincy ? Cricket News Update
India?s former captain and top-order batsman, Rahul Dravid, has backed Mahendra Singh Dhoni to continue to lead the Men in Blue in near future and does not want the fans to forget that the wicketkeeper/batsman has been one of the country?s most successful captains of all times.
The cricketer from Jharkhand took over the T20 leadership during the inaugural edition of the ICC World T20 2007 in South Africa, helping his country lift the title. The hard-hitting batsman was later appointed as the Indian skipper in all three formats of the game.
He successfully led the Chennai Super Kings in various seasons of the Indian Premier League as well as the Champions League T20.
The wicketkeeper however, has been under immense criticism over the last 14 months, after India?s disastrous tours of England and Australia, where the Men in Blue lost eight foreign Tests consecutively, where Dhoni was ultra-defensive at times, allowing the opposition batsmen to take games away from India?s grasp.
While talking to ESPNcricinfo, Dhoni's predecessor expressed that the wicketkeeper has been one of the best captains produced by India, bringing a lot of laurels to the country. He admitted that Dhoni has not enjoyed a lot of success recently but believes that he will come good in future.
?He has had a disappointing last year but he has won India a World Cup, we've been the No. 1 Test side under Dhoni. If you put pressure on him so early in the piece, or if you try to change someone like Dhoni now, I don't think you'll get to see what he's learned from the last year,? Dravid said.
However, the legendary batsman is of the opinion that leading India in all formats has taken a toll on his batting and the selectors may think about relieving some of the 31-year-old cricketer?s workload in future.
He added, ?From his own personal point of view, you also want to see the best of Dhoni as a player. He has a lot to contribute as a batsman and wicketkeeper and we want to see the best of that.?
