Leadership: Thornton's 3 C's | The Change Anything Blog

courtesy abduzeedo.com

Men make history and not the other way around. In periods where there is no leadership, society stands still. Progress occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better. ? Harry S. Truman

It is impossible to overstate the importance of solid leadership when it comes to a company or organization. Whether you work an hourly wage, or are the CEO of a company, you will have opportunities for leadership, both formal and informal. Paul B Thornton?s 1999 book Be The Leader, Make The Difference proposes a framework for understanding effective leadership called the 3-C Model. The three C?s it encompasses are challenge, confidence, and coaching. Leaders are to challenge those they lead, build confidence in them, and than coach them to success.

1. Challenge:

  • Share vision; help people see that more is possible
  • Set very high goals; force people to leave their comfort zone
  • Ask challenging questions to help people question their assumptions about what is possible

2. Confidence

  • Instill confidence by recognizing and rewarding positive accomplishments
  • Verbally express confidence
  • Provide opportunities for responsibility and authority, therefore expressing confidence in them
  • Remind them of past successes

3. Coaching

  • Provide clear and immediate feedback
  • Showcase the examples of those who accomplish much
  • Set an example of continual self-improvement
  • Help people see what they need to do to be successful and reach their individual and collective goals
